Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has
condemned the latest attack on Wagga Mongono community in Madagali
Local Government Area of Adamawa State, stressing that Nigeria cannot
continue to lose lives to insecurity while authorities celebrate revenue
achievements.
The assault, which took place on Tuesday, left at
least four people dead, several others injured, and homes, shops, and a
church destroyed by suspected insurgents. Many residents fled into nearby
bushes to escape the violence.
Reacting in a post on his X (formerly Twitter)
handle, Atiku described the incident as “deeply personal,” given his Adamawa
roots, and expressed condolences to the victims’ families.
“We cannot continue to lose our productive population
to sundry criminalities and yet make bogus claims about reaching revenue
targets, as though the lives of the workforce that produces the revenue don’t
matter,” he said.
Calls for Urgent Federal Action
Atiku urged the federal government to move beyond
“empty rhetoric and propaganda” and take decisive, sustained measures to
protect lives and property.
“Our people are tired of government’s empty claims of
improvements in security. Nigerians deserve more than promises; they deserve
peace, security, and the freedom to live in any place of their choice without
fear,” he added.
The former Vice President noted that insecurity
remains a daily reality for millions of Nigerians, and the Wagga Mongono
tragedy is another painful reminder of how far the country is from achieving
true stability.
He concluded his statement with prayers for the
victims:
“May Almighty Allah grant eternal rest to the
departed, healing to the injured, and comfort to all who mourn.”
