A fresh crisis has erupted within the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP) following conflicting pronouncements on the status of
its Akwa Ibom State Executive Committee.
On Wednesday, the PDP’s National Working Committee
(NWC), in a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Debo
Ologunagba, announced the dissolution of the Akwa Ibom Exco.
The NWC also inaugurated a 31-member caretaker committee led by
Barrister Igwat Umoren, with a three-month mandate pending the conduct
of new state congresses.
However, the party’s National Secretary, Senator
Samuel Anyanwu, swiftly countered the announcement, describing it as “null
and void.”
In a statement addressed to the embattled State
Chairman, Anyanwu said there had been no formal sitting of the NWC where such a
resolution was reached.
“For purposes of clarity, that press release should be
disregarded because there was no formal sitting of the National Working
Committee in which such a decision was taken,” he stated.
Anyanwu argued that the National Publicity
Secretary has no powers to take actions relating to the implementation of
NWC decisions.
He stressed that the Akwa Ibom PDP Exco remains intact and undissolved under
the party’s 2017 constitution as amended.
“Please consider this letter as the rightful authority
for you to continue in your duties,” the statement concluded.
The conflicting directives have deepened internal
tensions within the PDP, raising concerns over party unity in the South-South
state, which is one of its traditional strongholds.
