The Federal Government has granted approval for the
establishment of the Tony Iredia University of Communications.
It will be the third private university in the Edo
State capital after the Benson Idahosa University and the Wellspring
University.
Named after veteran broadcaster and former
Director-General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Professor Tonnie
Osa Iredia, the institution is set to specialize in media, communication, and
related disciplines.
Professor Iredia, an accomplished journalist,
academic, and administrator, is renowned for his transformative leadership in
Nigeria's broadcast industry.
During his tenure as NTA Director-General, he
significantly expanded the network's reach, increasing the number of
transmitting stations from 27 to 68 in just one year.
His pioneering efforts also institutionalized live
coverage of national events and led to the creation of NTA International for
global broadcasting.
Beyond his contributions to broadcasting, Iredia has
served in various strategic roles, including Director-General of the National
Orientation Agency (NOA) and Technical Assistant on elections to Liberia's
Independent Elections Commission.
He is a fellow of multiple professional bodies,
including the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Nigerian Institute of Management, and
Society for Peace Studies & Practice.
The Tony Iredia University of Communications is
expected to become a center of excellence for training media professionals,
journalists, and communication experts in Nigeria.
It's focus is expected to align with Iredia's lifelong
dedication to promoting effective communication in developing economies, as
reflected in his best-selling book, Communication Skills: Fundamentals of
Effective Communication in Developing Economies.
The university is anticipated to attract students and
professionals seeking advanced knowledge in media, journalism, and strategic
communication.
