In a lively and candid interview on Symfoni, Dr. Chris
Ngige, former governor of Anambra State and seasoned politician, humorously
described Nigeria's political world as "the business of madmen." His
comment, a blend of wit and truth, highlighted the chaotic and exhausting
nature of politics.
Ngige shared this perspective while recalling a
conversation with Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, a businessman who had recently ventured
into politics. Recounting the exchange, U explained how he warned Ubah about
the stark contrast between the structured world of business and the
unpredictable, often grueling, world of politics.
"I told him, 'Ifeanyi, you're a businessman,' and
when he agreed, I reminded him of the money he had promised us," Ngige
said. "Then, I added, 'You've made a mistake getting into this. Politics
is the business of madmen. You won't see your family, you'll be stuck in
meetings until 2, 3, or even 4 a.m., and yet, you must keep going. It's endless
and will drive you crazy.'" Ngige laughed as he recalled the advice, but
he also praised Ubah's perseverance, acknowledging that Ubah had "stuck it
out," showing he was just as resilient as the rest of them.
Through his humorous narrative, Ngige painted a vivid
picture of the demanding nature of politics, where sleepless nights, endless
commitments, and personal sacrifices are a given. His insights also reflected
the camaraderie among politicians who share the same challenges. While politics
can often seem glamorous from the outside, Ngige's honest account served as a
reminder that the reality involves constant pressure and endurance, making it a
"business of madmen" that only the toughest can survive.
