The Nigerian House of Representatives has adopted a
motion introduced by Honourable Esosa Iyawe, representing Oredo Federal
Constituency, calling for an investigation into allegations of unprofessional
practices by officials of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA).
Iyawe, an engineer by profession, drew the attention
of the green chamber to widespread racketeering within the FHA, which he
alleged has led to significant deviations from the original housing plans
approved by the Federal Government across the country.
In his submission, Iyawe highlighted that Federal
Government-approved plans for the provision of affordable housing included
essential features such as green areas, recreational facilities, banks, health
centres, and community spaces to promote a conducive living environment.
However, he lamented that these approved plans had been flagrantly disregarded.
Iyawe accused the FHA of converting spaces initially
designated for green areas, recreational centres, and essential infrastructure
into residential plots, which are then sold at a profit to unsuspecting
citizens. He expressed particular concern for the safety and welfare of
Nigerians living in FHA estates in Lagos and Abuja, where such practices
allegedly compromise structural integrity and endanger lives.
“Mr Speaker, I rise to move a motion on the need to
investigate the deviation of Federal Government-approved housing estates for
excessive profiteering,” Iyawe stated. “The Federal Housing Authority was
established, among other functions, to develop and manage real estate on a
commercial basis in all states of the federation, and to prepare and submit
proposals for national housing programmes.”
He further elaborated: “The house is aware that the
FHA executes housing programmes only after receiving Federal Government
approval. These approved plans encompass serene and tranquil living spaces,
with designated areas for green zones, recreational facilities, and general
utilities such as banks, health centres, post offices, and shopping malls.”
Iyawe expressed concern that the FHA, after
construction began and subscriptions were secured, had deviated from these
approved plans in locations such as Guzape, Lugbe, and Lagos. He alleged that
the FHA had converted spaces allocated for green areas and essential
infrastructure into residential plots, selling them at premium prices.
He warned that the practice of building on spaces
intended for drainage and floodwater channels poses severe risks to residents,
particularly during Nigeria’s rainy season.
The motion, which called for the House Committee on
Public Assets to investigate these allegations and report back within four
weeks, received overwhelming support. Many lawmakers urged that all relevant
committees be involved to ensure a thorough investigation.
The House, led by the Speaker, Rt Honourable Tajudeen
Abbas, unanimously adopted the motion, signalling a commitment to addressing
these critical concerns.
