Inter Miami made history on Saturday, capturing their
first-ever MLS Cup with a 3–1 victory against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Chase
Stadium, thanks to late heroics from Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende, both
assisted by Lionel Messi.
Despite Vancouver controlling large portions of the
match and creating several promising opportunities, it was Messi’s influence
that ultimately swung the game in Miami’s favor, securing his first MLS league
title and capping a stellar season in the United States.
“This was one of our main goals,” Messi, who was named
the match MVP, said. “Last year we finished first in the league and
unfortunately we were knocked out in the first round. The MLS was the ultimate
prize. The team put in a tremendous effort and rose to the occasion.”
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
Miami drew first blood in the eighth minute when Messi
found Allende in space. The winger’s low cross deflected off Vancouver defender
Edier Ocampo and into his own net, giving the hosts an early lead.
Vancouver, however, responded in the 60th minute when
Ali Ahmed drove into the box and fired a low shot that goalkeeper Rios Novo
couldn’t hold, leveling the score at 1–1.
The breakthrough came for Miami in the 71st minute.
Messi capitalized on a loose Vancouver touch and slid the ball to Rodrigo De
Paul, who calmly finished past Yohei Takaoka, restoring Miami’s advantage.
The title was sealed deep into stoppage time when
Messi threaded a perfectly timed pass to Allende, prompting emotional scenes
from teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, who were playing their final MLS
match.
“I’m happy for them. Finishing their careers this way
is very nice for everyone,” Messi said of his veteran teammates. “Something
very beautiful is coming to an end for them… I wish them all the best.”
CELEBRATIONS AND PRAISE
David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami and architect
of the club’s ambitious project, joined the celebrations on the field.
“All credit to Vancouver, they played a great game and
put us under a lot of pressure,” Beckham said. “When you give the ball to Leo
(Messi), he creates chances. The team stuck together, and they’ve done that all
year.”
Beckham added that the journey to the MLS Cup was
challenging: “There were a lot of sleepless nights. I always believed in Miami
and in bringing a team here… We promised our fans we’d bring the best players
and bring success. Next year is a new year and we go again — but tonight, we
celebrate.”
With Messi leading the charge, Inter Miami has not
only won its first MLS Cup but has also firmly established itself as a rising
force in American soccer.
