MTN South Africa, in collaboration with American low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite provider Lynk Global, has successfully conducted Africa's first satellite-to-mobile voice call using a standard smartphone. The trial took place in Vryburg, North West province, South Africa, and demonstrated the potential to enhance connectivity in underserved and rural areas.

During the trial, the companies tested voice call quality and SMS capabilities over a LEO satellite connection. This initiative is part of MTN's efforts to address coverage challenges in remote regions by complementing its ground-based cell towers with satellite technology.

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) authorized the use of MTN-licensed radio frequencies for the trial. This development aligns with broader industry trends, as mobile operators and smartphone manufacturers increasingly explore satellite services to close network coverage gaps. ?

MTN South Africa is also exploring partnerships with various LEO satellite operators to enhance its service offerings, indicating a competitive move similar to its rival Cell C and Vodacom, which partnered with Amazon's Project Kuiper in 2023.

LEO satellites offer high-speed internet access in areas lacking adequate terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure. This successful trial marks a significant step toward improving connectivity for underserved communities across Africa.
