Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba has defended his
former coach, José Mourinho, who has faced backlash over comments made after
Monday morning’s derby in Turkey between Galatasaray and
Fenerbahçe.
The Chelsea icon, who played under Mourinho at
Stamford Bridge, released a statement backing the Portuguese coach.
Following a gruelling match, Mourinho stated in his
post-match press conference that the “Galatasaray bench was jumping like
monkeys.”
The remark has sparked widespread criticism, leading
Galatasaray to file a complaint with the Turkish Football Federation and UEFA,
accusing Mourinho of making racist comments. Meanwhile, others have come to
Mourinho’s defence.
In a statement on his official X account, Drogba
addressed Galatasaray fans: “Dear Galatasaray… You know how proud I was to wear
the yellow and red jersey, also my love for the most decorated club in Turkey.
“We all know how passionate and heated rivalries can
be, and I’ve been lucky enough to experience it.”
Drogba went on to strongly defend his former manager,
“I’ve seen the recent comments about José Mourinho. Trust me, I have known José
for 25 years, and he is not a racist—history (past and recent) proves
it.”
“Let’s focus on our games, support our brilliant
lions, and win the league to get closer to our five stars.”
He concluded his statement by dismissing the
accusations, “How can my dad be a racist? Come on, guys.”
Drogba’s statement follows support from several
players who played under Mourinho, including Ghanaian international Michael
Essien.
