Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has revealed that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) swiftly deployed an aerial surveillance platform to support efforts aimed at rescuing pupils and teachers abducted by bandits in the state.

The disclosure was made during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and the Air Officer Commanding Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Suleh, according to a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.

Governor Makinde explained that the surveillance aircraft was deployed immediately after the abduction was reported, providing critical intelligence that has strengthened ongoing search-and-rescue operations.

According to him, information gathered through the aerial missions has continued to assist security agencies in monitoring developments, coordinating operations, and advancing efforts to secure the safe release of the victims.

The governor appealed to residents to remain patient and supportive, assuring them that the government and security agencies are deploying every available resource to bring the abducted pupils and teachers home safely.

Makinde commended the Nigerian Air Force for its prompt intervention and sustained support, noting that the Air Force made its surveillance platform available while Oyo State's newly acquired aerial assets are still undergoing final preparations at the NAF Base in Lagos.

He disclosed that the state government procured the aircraft after consultations with the Air Force to ensure access to technical maintenance, engineering support, and pilot training.

The governor expressed optimism that the new aerial assets would significantly strengthen security operations not only within Oyo State but also across neighbouring states once they become fully operational.

Speaking on behalf of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Suleh reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force's commitment to supporting the government and people of Oyo State in efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims.

He also praised the state government for its continued support towards Air Force projects and infrastructure development within the state.

The Air Force reiterated its determination to work closely with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to protect lives and property while addressing security challenges across the country.

The abducted victims, comprising pupils and teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School, were kidnapped on May 15 during a deadly attack by armed bandits.

Tragically, one of the abducted teachers was reportedly killed while in captivity.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage, prompting protests by teachers' unions and civil society organisations in Ibadan, who demanded urgent action from authorities.

Last week, the House of Representatives called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure the safe return of the victims.

In response to the worsening security situation, President Bola Tinubu approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and authorised the deployment of a special rescue team to support ongoing efforts to locate and rescue the abducted pupils and teachers.
