The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed
that the United States carried out precision air strikes on terrorist targets
in northwestern Nigeria, following an announcement by US President Donald Trump
regarding operations against Islamic State militants.
In a statement released early Friday, the Ministry
emphasised that Nigeria remains engaged in structured security cooperation with
international partners, including the United States, to address the ongoing
threat of terrorism and violent extremism.
“This has led to precision hits on terrorist targets
in Nigeria by air strikes in the North West,” the statement read.
The Ministry highlighted that the cooperation
encompasses intelligence sharing, strategic coordination, and other support
measures conducted in line with international law, mutual respect for
sovereignty, and commitments to regional and global security.
“All counter-terrorism efforts are guided by the
primacy of protecting civilian lives, safeguarding national unity, and
upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith or
ethnicity,” the statement added. “Terrorist violence in any form, whether
directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities, remains an affront to
Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security.”
The Ministry further noted that the Federal Government
continues to work with partners to weaken terrorist networks, disrupt their
financing and logistics, prevent cross-border threats, and strengthen Nigeria’s
security institutions and intelligence capabilities.
The Ministry concluded by pledging to keep the public
informed through official channels as counter-terrorism operations continue.
