The total number of active electricity customers across Nigeria rose
from 11.89 million in July to 11.96 million in August 2025,
according to the latest data released by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory
Commission (NERC).
In a statement posted on its official X and
Instagram handles on Monday, NERC said the figures were drawn from its Metering
Factsheet for July and August 2025, covering all 11 electricity
distribution companies (DisCos) nationwide.
“Out of these, 6.58 million customers were metered,
resulting in a metering rate of 55.01%, up slightly from 54.71% in
July,” the Commission stated. “A total of 70,888 customers were
newly metered in August, compared to 76,783 in July, reflecting ongoing
metering efforts across the **Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).”
NERC noted that the modest improvement reflects continued
reforms and investments in metering and customer management by the DisCos,
aimed at enhancing billing transparency and consumer trust.
Among the top performers in metering coverage were:
Earlier in April, the Commission sanctioned eight
DisCos — including Abuja, Ikeja, Eko, Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola
Electricity Distribution Companies — for violating monthly energy caps
imposed on estimated billing for unmetered customers.
The erring companies were fined a combined ?628
million, with NERC directing them to provide credit adjustments to
all affected customers.
The regulator further revealed that in Q2 2025,
a total of 225,631 meters were installed nationwide — a 20.55%
increase from 187,161 meters in the first quarter.
Of these installations:
NERC said the continued expansion of metering coverage
remains central to its drive for equitable billing, consumer
protection, and energy sector accountability.
