The Okuama community in Delta State faces mounting concerns as another prominent leader, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, is reportedly in critical condition while in military detention.

Pa Okugbaye’s detention follows the demolition of Okuama earlier this year, a reprisal linked to the killing of 17 soldiers. Sources claim his health has deteriorated significantly in an undisclosed facility.

This development comes shortly after the death of the community's President General, Pa James Oghoroko, in custody, intensifying fears among residents.

Speaking on the matter, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN), the lead counsel for the community, described the situation as alarming and unjust.

“This is unacceptable. The community is pursuing justice in court, yet its leaders are perishing in detention. It is a gross violation of human rights and due process,” Akpomudje lamented.

The community had earlier filed a case at the Federal High Court, Warri, challenging the military’s actions, which included large-scale destruction and the displacement of residents.

Akpomudje urged authorities to ensure the welfare and medical care of detainees. “Ignoring their condition only aggravates the crisis and could lead to further unrest,” he warned.

The Okuama crisis has drawn criticism from human rights groups, with activists demanding accountability, transparency in detainees’ treatment, and a fair judicial process for the affected community.
