Women in Dangguruk Community, located in Jos South
Local Government Area of Plateau State, staged a dramatic protest on Thursday
against the consumption and sale of locally brewed alcoholic beverages, which
they say have fueled social and family problems in the area.
The women carried out a community-led crackdown
targeting popular local drinks such as koskolo, cheskela, and other alcoholic
beverages believed to be contributing to irresponsible behavior, domestic
hardship, and declining moral standards within the community.
Chanting slogans including, “No going back, koskolo
must stop,” the protesters marched through the community, visiting shops and
outlets where the drinks were sold.
During the exercise, they confiscated cartons, kegs,
and containers of alcoholic beverages before publicly setting them on fire in a
symbolic demonstration against alcohol abuse.
According to the women, the action was aimed at
drawing attention to the negative impact excessive alcohol consumption has had
on families and community development.
They expressed concern that many households have
suffered economic and social setbacks due to alcohol-related issues, prompting
them to take collective action to address the problem.
The protest highlights growing concerns among
residents about substance abuse and its effects on family welfare, community
peace, and youth development in the area.
Community members are expected to continue discussions
on measures that could help curb alcohol abuse and promote healthier lifestyles
among residents.
