The France international missed Madrid’s 1-1 draw with
Al Hilal in their FIFA Club World Cup opener at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami
on Wednesday. He had been admitted to hospital earlier in the week after
experiencing fever and gastrointestinal symptoms and did not participate in
recent training sessions.
“Our player Kylian Mbappé was discharged from hospital
this afternoon and has returned to the Real Madrid camp,” the club said in a
follow-up statement. “Mbappé will continue with specific medical treatment and
will progressively rejoin team activity.”
The 25-year-old, who scored 43 goals across all
competitions last season, joined Real Madrid in the summer amid high
expectations. However, the team endured a trophyless campaign in his debut
season.
Mbappé first linked up with new head coach Xabi Alonso
at the Valdebebas training ground last Friday, following international duty
with France in the UEFA Nations League. He traveled with the squad to the
United States on Saturday but was notably absent from the team’s open training
session on Tuesday in Palm Beach Gardens due to illness.
In Mbappé’s absence, 19-year-old Gonzalo García
started up front and opened the scoring for Los Blancos. Al Hilal’s Rúben Neves
later equalized, and Madrid missed the chance to seal a late victory when
Federico Valverde’s stoppage-time penalty was saved by Yassine Bono.
The Club World Cup represents Madrid’s first
opportunity to secure silverware under Alonso, who has already overseen the
signings of defenders Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
