Serena and Venus Williams’ return to the US Open
women’s doubles ended in disappointment after the legendary sisters surrendered
a 5–0 lead in the deciding match tiebreak and lost to 14th seeds Hao-Ching Chan
and Maya Joint.
The Williams sisters were beaten 6–3, 6–7 (6), 7–6
(10–7) by Chan and Joint in a thrilling contest.
After dropping the opening set, Serena and Venus
fought back to claim the second set and force a deciding match tiebreak. The
sisters also showed remarkable resilience in the third set, recovering from 1–4
down to level the contest and send it into a 10-point decider.
The Williams sisters made an impressive start to the
tiebreak, winning the first five points to establish what appeared to be a
commanding advantage.
However, Chan and Joint mounted a remarkable comeback
as the Americans struggled to maintain their momentum. Both Serena and Venus
committed double faults during the crucial stages, allowing their opponents to
turn the match around and eventually seal victory.
The defeat marked the sisters’ first appearance
together at the US Open since 2022.
Serena and Venus have enjoyed one of the most
successful partnerships in women’s doubles history, winning 14 Grand Slam
doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals together in 2000, 2008 and 2012.
At the US Open, the sisters captured the women’s
doubles championship in 1999 and 2009.
Serena, 44, returned to professional tennis this year
following an extended break, while 46-year-old Venus has continued to compete
on the tour.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, their return to the US
Open together provided another memorable chapter in the remarkable careers of
two of tennis’ greatest players.
