Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has
urged the club's board not to rush into sacking Michael Carrick, insisting the
current manager deserves time to turn things around at Old Trafford.
United have struggled in recent weeks, going six
matches without a win in all competitions, a run that includes three defeats.
The slump has left the club in 13th place in the Premier League table.
Ten Hag, who won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup during
his time at the club, said lasting progress depends on solid structures and
patience. He warned that dismissing Carrick would be a decision driven by
public emotion rather than sound strategy.
Speaking in an interview with The Athletic, he said a
club needs competent leadership, the right strategy, a clear identity, defined
work methods and quality people, and then time to let it all work. Sacking
Carrick, he said, "would not be the solution. Absolutely not." He
acknowledged that supporters may demand a change if results do not improve, but
said such calls come from emotion, and that rational decision-making must
prevail.
Ten Hag praised Carrick's coaching ability, pointing
to his work at Middlesbrough and throughout last season. He said the manager
should be allowed to carry out his plan, adding that he believes Carrick has a
capable coaching team around him.
Carrick signed a two-year contract as permanent
manager in May, following a successful interim spell after the departure of
RĂºben Amorim.
