Toyin Abraham’s latest film, Oversabi Aunty,
has crossed the ?1 billion mark at the box office, further cementing its place
among Nollywood’s most commercially successful productions.
According to distributor FilmOne, the movie has
grossed ?1.01 billion across West African cinemas, making it the fourth-highest-grossing
Nigerian film ever released in cinemas.
The milestone also makes Oversabi Aunty the first
Nollywood directorial debut to surpass the ?1 billion threshold — a rare
achievement in an industry where box-office dominance is typically driven by
long-established directors.
The film enjoyed a strong opening run, earning over ?700
million within its first three weeks in cinemas. Updated figures show it
maintained steady audience interest well beyond its initial release window,
reinforcing its status as one of Nollywood’s biggest commercial hits.
What the ?1bn Milestone Means for
Nollywood
While billion-naira box office performances are
becoming more frequent, the feat remains a significant benchmark for the
Nigerian film industry. Once plagued by inconsistent theatrical success,
Nollywood is now witnessing multiple releases break revenue records, reflecting
growing audience confidence in cinema-going.
Oversabi Aunty’s
success is particularly notable because it was not driven by a long-established
directing brand. For a first-time director to reach this level suggests that
audiences are increasingly responding to compelling storytelling, casting
strength, and word-of-mouth buzz rather than reputation alone — a shift that
could create more opportunities for emerging filmmakers. For Toyin Abraham, it
marks another major career win.
Regional Success and Theatrical Confidence
FilmOne confirmed that the film’s revenue was
generated from cinemas across West Africa, not Nigeria alone. This
regional performance highlights a growing strategy within Nollywood to expand
theatrical distribution beyond national borders in order to drive sustained
growth.
The film’s box office run also reinforces the
continued relevance of cinema-first releases, even as streaming platforms
reshape movie distribution. Crossing ?1 billion in theatrical earnings
demonstrates that cinemas can still deliver strong returns before films
transition to digital platforms.
Raising the Bar for Future Releases
As more films approach or surpass the ?1 billion mark,
expectations across the industry are rising. Distributors and investors may
become more selective, backing projects with strong commercial potential rather
than funding a large volume of lower-impact releases.
With Oversabi Aunty’s record-breaking
performance, Nollywood’s box office bar has once again been raised — and future
releases will inevitably be measured against it.
