A member of a local vigilante group, Hambali Sa’adu,
has lost his life after suspected bandits launched an ambush on a joint
security patrol in Bauchi State.
The incident was confirmed by Police Public Relations
Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, in a statement released on Tuesday, April 14.
According to the police, the attack took place on
Sunday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. along the Bakin Layi area within the Yankari
Game Reserve. A joint team made up of officers from the Mai-Ari Outpost and
local vigilante members reportedly came under intense gunfire from armed
bandits who had laid in wait.
During the confrontation, Sa’adu, a 27-year-old from
Mai-Ari Village in Maimadi Ward, sustained critical gunshot injuries. He was
later pronounced dead by a medical professional and subsequently buried in line
with Islamic traditions.
Following the ambush, the security operatives
regrouped and launched a counteroffensive against the attackers. The police
noted that the team pursued the fleeing suspects and engaged them in a fierce
exchange, forcing them to retreat, with some believed to have escaped with
gunshot wounds.
Authorities confirmed that four of the suspected
bandits were killed during the operation, while four others were apprehended
and are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Sani-Omolori

community, describing the fallen vigilante as courageous and dedicated to
protecting his people. He also reaffirmed the command’s resolve to combat
banditry, directing intensified security operations within and around the
