The Taraba State Police Command has commenced a
comprehensive investigation into a violent incident in Lau Local Government
Area that claimed the lives of two individuals, including a forest guard.
The development was confirmed by the Acting Police
Public Relations Officer, ASP Victor Mshelizah, in a statement issued on
Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
According to initial reports, the situation began when
a forest guard identified as Jerry Jimmy apprehended a suspect while carrying
out his duties. During the arrest, a confrontation broke out, and the suspect
allegedly stabbed the guard in the chest with a hidden knife, resulting in
fatal injuries.
In a swift turn of events, the suspect—later
identified as Ya’u Jaro Saidu from Jegem Village in Lau LGA—was reportedly
attacked and killed by an angry mob in retaliation.
The Commissioner of Police, Moorkwap Sebastian
Dongshal, visited the scene at Mararaban Kunini for an on-the-spot assessment.
The incident has been classified as a case involving homicide and mob action.
Following the tragedy, the police chief engaged
leaders from both the Fulani and Jenjo communities, urging them to maintain
peace, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and promote unity.
Community representatives, in response, assured the
police of their commitment to peaceful coexistence and pledged their support in
maintaining order.
The Commissioner has ordered a full investigation to
identify and bring to justice all those involved in both the fatal stabbing and
the subsequent mob attack.
The police also called on residents to remain calm,
obey the law, and report any suspicious activities, reaffirming their
dedication to protecting lives and property across the state.
