At least 12 people have lost their lives and nine
others sustained injuries following a deadly mass shooting at the Jumpers
Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, South Africa.
According to reports, police responded to the scene at
approximately 11:10 p.m. on Tuesday after receiving alerts about a shooting
incident. Upon arrival, officers discovered multiple victims suffering from
gunshot wounds across different locations within the settlement.
Eleven victims — eight men and three women — were
pronounced dead at the scene. A twelfth victim, a man who was rushed to
hospital for treatment, later died from his injuries.
Nine other injured individuals were transported to
various medical facilities, where they continue to receive treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that more than ten
heavily armed suspects arrived at the settlement in a white Toyota Quantum
shortly after 8 p.m. The gunmen reportedly opened fire on residents at several
points within the community before escaping in the same vehicle.
Residents described scenes of terror as gunfire echoed
through the settlement for an extended period. One eyewitness told local media
that the shooting continued for over an hour, forcing him to hide in a toilet
while the attack unfolded.
Community members say violence has become increasingly
common in the area. Residents recalled that a local community leader was shot
and killed just last month, heightening fears among those living in the
settlement.
A community representative, who requested anonymity
due to safety concerns, suggested that the attack may be connected to ongoing
disputes linked to illegal mining operations in the region.
“This place is very dangerous. I don't want to say
much because tomorrow it could be me. It is heartbreaking that people were
killed in such a brutal manner,” the community leader said.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the
incident, and no arrests had been announced at the time of reporting. Police
are working to establish the motive behind the attack and identify those
responsible.
