A 12-year-old student, Jada West, has died after collapsing days following a fight with another student near a school bus stop in Villa Rica, a city outside Atlanta in the U.S. state of Georgia.

According to reports, West suffered a brain injury after the altercation on March 5 and later collapsed near her home. She was rushed to the hospital after her heart reportedly stopped shortly afterward.

Cellphone footage shared on Facebook by her aunt, De’Quala McClendon, showed the argument between West and another girl shortly after both students were ordered off their school bus around 5 p.m.

The video captured the two girls exchanging heated words as bystanders watched. Witnesses could be heard commenting while the argument escalated into a physical fight.

Both students, who attend Mason Creek Middle School, were seen punching and slapping each other before they fell to the ground during the struggle.

After the fall, a friend was heard shouting West’s name in the video. Although she managed to get up and walk away, she later suffered a medical emergency and was taken to the hospital.

Her aunt later posted a video showing West in a hospital bed connected to medical equipment after she reportedly sustained severe brain damage.

In a message shared online shortly before the girl’s death, McClendon wrote that what appeared to be a normal fight turned tragic when West’s heart stopped before she could even make it home.

According to family members, the two girls did not know each other before the confrontation, which reportedly began earlier at school and continued on the bus.

West’s mother also claimed her daughter had been experiencing bullying since recently transferring to the school.

Authorities said further details about the exact circumstances of her death have not yet been released.

The Villa Rica Police Department confirmed that no charges have been filed so far and that individuals seen in the footage have not been publicly identified. Investigators are working alongside the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office as the case remains under review.

Meanwhile, the local school district said it was deeply saddened by the student’s death and extended condolences to her family.

A spokesperson noted that the incident occurred after school hours and away from school property, adding that the matter is currently under police investigation.
