UYO, Nigeria — At just 14 years old, Ekeruche Sophia Ebube has already made a bold statement in Nigeria’s scrabble scene. Despite clinching a silver medal at the ongoing Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the teenage sensation says her sights are firmly set on becoming the best — not just in the region, but in the country and beyond.

Hailing from Ndokwa West Local Government Area of Delta State and a student at Ikorodu Junior High School in Lagos, Sophia is not resting on her laurels.

“Scrabble is my passion, but winning silver is not enough,” she declared. “I know I can do more. This is just the beginning of my career, and I am determined to keep working hard to become the best.”

Sophia’s love for scrabble began in primary school, quickly evolving from a casual pastime into a platform for intellectual challenge and self-discovery. Now, it has become a calling — one that she is determined to pursue, no matter the odds.

“Every scrabble game is like solving a puzzle. I love the challenge, I love competing, and I want to be among those selected by the Scouting and Mentorship Committee to help me grow and compete internationally,” she said.

Her journey, however, has not been without obstacles. Coming from a modest background, her family has made sacrifices to support her ambitions — from securing training materials to funding trips to tournaments.

Her coach, Abraham Omoroba, described her as a rare talent with an unrelenting work ethic.

“Sophia is very focused and committed. While some players get carried away by early success, she constantly pushes herself to improve. Even after winning silver, she was more concerned about what she could have done better,” Omoroba said.

He continued, “She studies word lists, practices consistently, and learns from her mistakes. What she needs now is support — access to top-tier competitions, mentorship, and sponsorship to help her grow.”

Scrabble, like many niche sports in Nigeria, suffers from underfunding and limited developmental infrastructure, making it difficult for young talents to thrive without community support or personal sacrifice. But Sophia remains undeterred.

With aspirations to don Nigeria’s colours at international championships, she views every tournament as a step toward her dream.

“Every medal motivates me. This silver medal reminds me that I’m close to my goal, but I need to keep working harder,” she said with a confident smile.

As the Niger Delta Sports Festival draws to a close, one thing is clear — Ekeruche Sophia Ebube is not just a rising star; she is a determined young athlete on a mission. If her passion, resilience, and talent are anything to go by, Nigerian scrabble may soon have a new queen.
