The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has
accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of misleading
Nigerians about food prices and local production levels.
In a statement on Tuesday by its spokesman, Bolaji
Abdullahi, the party said the Federal Government’s claim of reduced food
costs and increased production was “false and politically motivated.”
“Contrary to what is being celebrated in official
circles, the reality on the ground is that the Tinubu government is
manipulating food prices and weaponising hunger for political gain,” the
statement read.
The ADC described the reported drop in food prices as artificial,
saying it was driven by import waivers that flooded the market with cheap
foreign products, thereby undermining local farmers battling with high input
costs and insecurity.
It further dismissed the government’s claim of not
releasing imported food into the market, questioning why food would be hoarded
during a national hunger crisis.
“The ADC condemns, in the strongest terms, the
weaponisation of hunger and calls for a complete overhaul of the current
agricultural approach,” Abdullahi said.
