Uyo, Nigeria — July 29, 2025 — The Akwa Ibom State Executive Council, chaired by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, has approved a series of key infrastructural, fiscal, and social initiatives aimed at accelerating development and improving governance in the state.

Chief among the decisions made at the Tuesday meeting held at Government House, Uyo, was the renewal of Julius Berger Plc’s maintenance contract for the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. The one-year extension, effective from July 1, 2025, ensures continued upkeep of the iconic sports facility.

Strategic Approvals to Tackle Urban Challenges

The Council also greenlit additional construction works at Ewet Luxury Estate, following topographical challenges and modifications to architectural designs. This is in line with the state’s broader vision for modern and sustainable urban housing.

In a related move, Council ratified the construction of over 4.5 kilometers of internal roads, complete with drainage and service ducts, within Dakkada Luxury Estate, Uyo. According to Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, Commissioner for Information, these projects are key components of the administration’s effort to boost livability and infrastructure across the capital city.

Medium-Term Fiscal Planning Moves Forward

In compliance with Section 18(1) of the State Fiscal Responsibility Law, the Council endorsed the Akwa Ibom State Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (2026–2028). The framework is expected to shape the state’s spending priorities over the next three years and will be transmitted to the State House of Assembly for legislative scrutiny and approval.

Launch of TSA and Land Management Platforms Scheduled

In a major step toward enhancing financial transparency, the Council adopted the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy. The official launch of the TSA platform, branded “Akwaremit”, along with the AkwaGIS land management platform, is scheduled for September 1, 2025.

These reforms are aimed at improving revenue efficiency, curbing leakages, and digitizing land-related transactions for citizens and investors alike.

Social and Environmental Projects Get the Green Light

In furtherance of its social welfare agenda, the Council approved the Phase III rollout of the Free Food Distribution Programme, set to begin on August 20, 2025, across all 31 Local Government Areas of the state. The program is part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to cushion the effects of inflation and food insecurity.

On sanitation, the Council sanctioned new projects in four LGAs as part of its Open Defecation Free (ODF) campaign, advancing the state’s commitment to improved public health and hygiene.

Additionally, the procurement of new sports equipment was approved ahead of the upcoming Akwa Ibom Sports Festival, reinforcing the state’s drive to promote youth development through sports.

ARISE Impact Framework and TETFund Visit

The Council also scheduled the public unveiling of the ARISE Socio-Economic Impact Framework for August 7, 2025. The framework is intended to evaluate and publicize the achievements of the Umo Eno administration under the ARISE Agenda, the state’s development blueprint.

The meeting concluded with a courtesy visit by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Board, which is in the state to commission landmark projects at Akwa Ibom State University.

Looking Ahead

The breadth of resolutions passed at the meeting reflects Governor Umo Eno’s integrated approach to governance, spanning infrastructure, fiscal reform, public welfare, and transparency. As the state gears up for the implementation of these projects and policies, stakeholders will be watching to see how these strategic moves translate into tangible results for Akwa Ibom citizens.
