The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has rescued 20
Ghanaian nationals held captive in a fortified compound in Obio Etoro
village, Uyo Local Government Area.
The successful operation, carried out on Monday,
August 18, 2025, followed a tip-off and was executed in collaboration with
the Ghana Police Service and the International Criminal Police
Organization (Interpol).
The Rescue Operation
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command’s
spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, said operatives stormed the building at
about 4:17 p.m., safely freeing 10 men and 10 women who had been
trafficked into Nigeria.
“This rescue was a product of seamless cooperation
between our command, the Ghana Police Service, and Interpol, demonstrating the
power of international partnerships in tackling human trafficking,” John
stated.
Victims Found in Distress
According to the police, the victims were discovered
in a disoriented state, unable to give clear accounts of their
experiences. Investigators suspect they may have been subjected to psychological
manipulation or hypnosis by the traffickers.
The rescued individuals are currently receiving
medical and psychological care while the police continue investigations to
dismantle the trafficking network.
Ongoing Investigation
John assured that the Command remains committed to
exposing the full extent of the syndicate’s activities.
“Our investigation is ongoing, and we are committed to
unraveling the details of this heinous crime,” she said, adding that the public
would be kept updated as new findings emerge.
The Command also vowed to sustain collaboration with
international partners to combat cross-border trafficking and ensure justice
for the victims.
