Former Aliou Cissé has officially brought his tenure
as head coach of the Libyan national team to an end, following a short stint
that concluded with two friendly matches played in March.
Cissé confirmed his departure after Libya recorded
back-to-back draws in international friendlies against Niger and Liberia,
marking his final games in charge of the team. Reflecting on his time with the
squad, he described the experience as both professionally rewarding and
personally meaningful.
The Senegalese coach is widely regarded for his
successful spell with Senegal national football team, where he served as head
coach for nearly a decade between 2015 and 2024. During that period, he guided
the team to a historic triumph at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, securing
Senegal’s first-ever continental title after finishing as runners-up in 2019.
His time with Libya, however, was relatively brief and
came during a challenging period for the team. The North African side failed to
qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, finishing third in their qualifying group
behind Cameroon national football team and Cape Verde national football team.
Cissé’s departure signals another transition phase for
Libyan football as the federation looks ahead to rebuilding and improving
performance in future competitions.
