Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has
declared that the club will prioritize winning the UEFA Europa League, with the
Portuguese tactician set to give youth players more opportunities in the
remaining Premier League matches.
Following a dramatic 5-4 aggregate comeback win over
Lyon in the quarter-finals, Amorim emphasized the need to manage resources
wisely as United aim to qualify for the UEFA Champions League through European
success.
United’s hopes of a strong domestic finish have
dwindled, with the Red Devils languishing in 14th place in the Premier League.
As such, Amorim has outlined his strategy to focus on youth development while
channeling full energy into the Europa League semi-final clash against Athletic
Bilbao.
“We have to be really focused on the Europa League and
we have to take a risk with the kids in the Premier League,” Amorim said.
“These are the types of moments that can change a lot in the players’ minds. We
have to be tough on that and the fans have to understand our focus is on
Europe.”
The Red Devils’ path to the semi-final was anything
but straightforward. After leading 2-0 in the first half at Old Trafford
through goals from Manuel Ugarte and Diogo Dalot, United were pegged back by
Lyon, who equalized through Corentin Tolisso and Nicolas Tagliafico. Extra time
saw the French side take a shock 4-2 lead thanks to goals from Rayan Cherki and
an Alexandre Lacazette penalty.
But United rallied with a sensational seven-minute
burst in the dying moments. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the spot,
Kobbie Mainoo struck in the 120th minute, and Harry Maguire sealed victory in
stoppage time, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Looking ahead to the tie with Bilbao, Amorim admitted
he has some familiarity with the Spanish side, having faced them in a
pre-season friendly during his time at Sporting CP.
“I know a little bit about them. They’re a technical
side with very good wingers,” he said. “We’ll have time to assess their
characteristics and prepare thoroughly. Our players were exhausted at the end
of the last game, so I need to be careful with the squad — even with Bruno.”
With United’s Premier League campaign all but over in
terms of top-four aspirations, Amorim’s calculated shift in focus marks a bold
statement of intent as he aims to deliver European silverware in his debut
season at Old Trafford.
