The Anambra State Police Command has issued a stern warning to popular social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, over a proposed candlelight procession in honour of the late businessman Mr Ifesinachi Onyekere.

The procession, which Otse reportedly planned to hold in Awka, was intended to mourn the late Managing Director of Fish Magnet outlet, who was abducted and murdered recently by suspected gunmen. According to Otse, the event aimed to draw public and government attention to the security challenges facing the state.

However, the state’s Commissioner of Police (CP), Ikioye Orutugu, has cautioned Otse against making statements or taking actions that could incite public tension or threaten the peaceful atmosphere in the state.

“No individual, regardless of social status, will be allowed to disrupt the existing peace and security architecture of the state,” CP Orutugu stated, as quoted by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Family of Deceased Disassociates From Procession

In a significant development, the family of the late Mr Onyekere has publicly dissociated itself from any candlelight event or memorial gathering being organized in his name.

“The family has asked to be allowed to grieve privately, while trusting the authorities to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” CP Orutugu added.

Call for Restraint on Social Media

The police command also advised social media users and public figures to avoid spreading misinformation or inflammatory remarks, especially on sensitive security matters.

“Residents should go about their lawful activities without fear. Anambra remains one of the most peaceful states in the region due to the proactive efforts of the police and other security agencies,” DSP Ikenga said.

The police reiterated their commitment to law and order, warning that anyone found inciting unrest, whether online or offline, would face the full weight of the law.

This development highlights the growing tension between public activism and official security protocols, as state authorities seek to balance freedom of expression with the need to maintain stability in volatile regions.
