Asisat Oshoala helped Bay FC to achieve a remarkable
milestone by recording the most wins by an expansion team in their debut
regular season.
Bay FC, which are based in San Francisco, stepped onto
the pitch for the first time in the NWSL in the 2024 season. Throughout the
season, they demonstrated their competitive spirit, securing 11 victories out
of 26 matches.
This impressive performance allowed the club to finish
in 7th place with a total of 34 points, effectively clinching a spot in the
playoffs. They are set to face off against the Washington Spirit on Sunday,
November 10, 2024, in what promises to be a thrilling postseason match.
Oshoala, who made the move to Bay FC following her
tenure with FC Barcelona, had a noteworthy individual season as well. The
talented forward netted seven goals, which placed her 13th on the league’s
scoring chart after the regular season. Her contributions were pivotal in
helping the team reach the playoffs in their first year.
Home matches for Bay FC take place at PayPal Park in
San Jose, California, a state-of-the-art facility with an 18,000-seat capacity.
This venue is not only the home ground for Bay FC but also hosts the San Jose
Earthquakes, a team in Major League Soccer (MLS), showcasing the growing
importance of women’s soccer in the region.
The club’s ownership is comprised of a diverse group
of stakeholders, led by the investment firm Sixth Street Partners, along with
four former United States women’s national team players who bring valuable
experience and perspective to the franchise.
The NWSL awarded an expansion franchise to Bay FC on
April 4, 2023, marking a significant moment as they became the first women’s
professional soccer club in the Bay Area since the San Jose CyberRays and FC
Gold Pride, both of which competed in previous leagues.
