Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been taken
to hospital after collapsing while watching the club's second team train on
Friday.
The 40-year-old had been unwell with a viral infection
and missed Tuesday's pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern's Champions
League tie against Arsenal. The former Manchester City and Belgium defender
returned to the touchline on Wednesday for the match.
Bayern confirmed the incident in a statement:
"Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing
during training for FC Bayern's amateurs." The club added that the
first-team coach had been watching the second team's session.
Kompany will undergo further medical examinations and
remain under medical supervision. For the time being, his coaching staff will
handle training and match operations. Bayern's next fixture is against Freiburg
in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with his assistants expected to take charge of
preparations and matchday duties. Aaron Danks, one of the assistants, had
earlier led the pre-match press conference ahead of the Arsenal game.
Sporting director Max Eberl said the manager's health
is the club's top priority. "We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to
ensure his speedy recovery," he said, adding that "Vinnie" will
receive all the necessary medical care, support and time he needs. Eberl also
expressed complete confidence in the coaching team that will take over
Kompany's duties.
The club has not given further details about the cause
of the collapse or how long Kompany may be away from his duties.
