Makurdi, Benue State — In a dramatic twist in Benue politics, the Speaker of the 10th Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Hyacinth Dajoh, has resigned from office, just 48 hours after controversially dismissing four lawmakers.

The resignation was announced on Sunday, August 24, 2025, through a letter shared on his official Facebook page.

“I hereby resign my position as Speaker of the 10th Benue State House of Assembly, effective August 24, 2025. This decision is made in good faith and in the best interest of our beloved state,” Dajoh wrote.

He expressed gratitude to his colleagues, adding:

“I am deeply thankful for the privilege to have served as the first among equals and for the support of my fellow lawmakers during my tenure.”

Fallout from Sackings

Dajoh’s exit follows a stormy week in the Assembly after he abruptly dismissed four lawmakers — a move that fueled political tensions and drew widespread criticism from stakeholders in the state.

Although the Speaker did not directly connect his resignation to the dismissals, analysts suggest the timing points to mounting internal pressure and possible divisions within the legislative chamber.

Continued Service to Constituency

Dajoh, who represents Gboko West State Constituency, assured his supporters that he remains committed to his legislative duties despite stepping down as Speaker.

“I remain dedicated to serving my constituency and contributing to the legislative responsibilities of the House,” he said.

Uncertain Path Ahead

The resignation has left the Assembly in a state of flux, with questions now swirling about who will emerge as the next Speaker and how the legislature will manage the political aftershocks of the crisis.

Observers say the development could reshape the balance of power in the Assembly as the 10th legislature attempts to restore stability in the coming weeks.
