Top government officials, including Christopher Musa
and Bello Matawalle, visited the theatre command headquarters in Borno to
review ongoing counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East.
Speaking with journalists during the visit, Musa
applauded the Armed Forces for making notable strides against insurgents. He
credited the progress to improved coordination, discipline, and professionalism
among military personnel.
He also called for continued support from Nigerians
and reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to
addressing the country’s security challenges.
Tribute to Fallen Heroes and Boost for
Troop Welfare
During their engagement with troops, the officials
conveyed the President’s appreciation for their dedication and sacrifices,
urging them to maintain the momentum in ongoing operations.
They later visited the Maiduguri Military Cemetery,
where wreaths were laid in honour of soldiers who lost their lives in service.
The visit also included the inspection of a newly
completed Command and Control Centre designed to improve intelligence gathering
and operational efficiency. In addition, newly constructed housing units for
military personnel were commissioned to enhance welfare and boost morale.
Operational Successes Highlighted
At the headquarters, Theatre Commander Abdulsalam
Abubakar briefed the delegation on recent developments.
He revealed that troops eliminated over 280 insurgents
during the Ramadan period, dismantled key supply networks, and secured the
release of kidnapped civilians. He added that sustained pressure through
combined air and ground operations continues to weaken insurgent activities.
Engagement with Traditional and State
Authorities
The visit began with a courtesy call on the Shehu of
Borno, where the officials commended the monarch’s support for security
operations and praised the resilience of residents in the region.
They also visited the Borno State Government House,
where they were received by the deputy governor, who acknowledged the efforts
of troops and the backing of the federal government. In response, the ministers
assured that military operations would continue while strengthening
collaboration with state authorities.
Rising Security Concerns in Borno
Despite recent gains, security challenges persist. In
March 2026, multiple explosions rocked Maiduguri, targeting areas including the
Post Office and the popular Monday Market.
The attacks claimed at least 23 lives and left over
100 people injured, disrupting a period of relative calm in the city.
The incidents have been linked to insurgent groups,
even as troops under Operation HADIN KAI intensify offensives aimed at cutting
off supply routes, neutralising fighters, and preventing further attacks.
