What is Ifa? Is it a religion, science, sport or mysticism?

Are you ready for a journey to the edge of reasoning to find out?

Ifa is a subject that is shrouded in ignorance, secrecy, mystery, magic, fear and many nonsensical postulations.

What is indisputable, however, is that it is a Yoruba ‘thing’, an ancient traditional practice that has spread to other communities in West Africa, and a very powerful identity of Yoruba descendants of the Slave Trade in Cuba, Bahia in Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, some parts of the USA and a few other places.

What is therefore special in the relationship between Ifa, the Yoruba and life? Does Ifa have anything to do with the Yoruba’s scholarship, religious plurality and tolerance?

What, really, is Ifa?

The Calabash is about to be broken to reveal all.

Dr. Tunde Adegbola is a Research Scientist, Consulting Engineer and Culture Activist. He has taught Artificial Intelligence (AI) for over 30 years in the Africa Regional Center for Information Science (ARCIS) at the University of Ibadan and 12 years in the Department of Systems Engineering at the University of Lagos as an associate and adjunct respectively. He has also taught for various other shorter stints in many other Nigerian universities, taking industry practice to classrooms. So, he comes loaded with experiences.

He deploys Ifa to teach computer science and technology, successfully using algorithms in Ifa practice. Through Ayo Olopon (a board game that requires deep intuitive mathematical skills, common amongst the Yoruba and other West African ethnicities) he teaches graduate students of Engineering, Information Science and Computer Science with unbelievable success.

There is now a global new thinking about Ifa that is worth researching beyond the misconceptions of dark rituals that new religions smear it with.

On ‘90 mins with Mathematical’ this Saturday, I shall chat with Dr. Tunde Adegbola, a born-again preacher, the son of a Christian Bishop, councillor and Christian apologist, as the public has the opportunity to ask him all and every question on Ifa.

If Ifa is not a religion, if it is not science either, what is it?
