From Warri to Sapele, Ughelli, Kwale, Ozoro, Oleh, Koko, Abraka, Orerokpe, Ogwashi-Uku, Otujeremi, and Oghara, the state of sports facilities in Delta State tells a disheartening story. Over the 16-year tenure of former Governors Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan and Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, sports infrastructure in the state has been plagued by neglect, substandard projects, and political interference.

Key Issues

1. Warri and Asaba Stadiums:

Efforts to upgrade the Asaba Stadium and facelift the Warri Stadium have been riddled with political controversies.

Poor-quality materials and inadequate execution have left these facilities in substandard conditions, with the Warri Stadium nearing total collapse.

2. Wider Neglect:

Across the state, several towns lack even basic sports infrastructure.

Previous funds earmarked for the development of mini sports facilities allegedly ended up misappropriated.

The Need for Intervention

As Delta State remains a hub of natural sports talents in Nigeria, it deserves world-class sports facilities to nurture these potentials. Standard infrastructure is essential not only for talent development but also for attracting national and international competitions.

A Way Forward

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is urged to prioritize the development of modern sports facilities across Delta State. This can be achieved by:

1. Partnering with Credible Firms: Indigenous companies specializing in sports infrastructure, such as Monimichelle Sports Limited, should be engaged to ensure quality projects.

2. Transparency in Project Execution: Funds allocated for sports development must be monitored to prevent diversion and ensure proper utilization.

3. Strategic Investments: Focus on key cities like Warri, Asaba, and Ughelli while also addressing rural areas to create an inclusive sports development agenda.

Conclusion

Delta State’s rich sports history and talent pool deserve better infrastructure. Now is the time for Governor Oborevwori to take decisive action and restore pride in the state’s sports sector by delivering lasting, high-quality facilities
