France coach Didier Deschamps has eased
concerns over Kylian Mbappé’s fitness after the France captain
picked up a knock during Real Madrid’s 3–1 La Liga victory over Villarreal
on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters at the French team’s Clairefontaine
training base near Paris, Deschamps confirmed that Mbappé’s injury was not
serious, though medical assessments would still be carried out.
“I spoke with Kylian; he had a small niggle but it’s
not serious, otherwise he wouldn’t be here today,” Deschamps said. “We will
take time with the medical staff to assess the situation and then see how it
develops.”
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté
is also set to undergo tests after being substituted with an injury in his
club’s 2–1 loss to Chelsea on Saturday.
France, who lead their qualifying group with two
wins from two matches, will host Azerbaijan on Friday at the Parc
des Princes before travelling to Iceland three days later.
