The Edo State Government has ordered the arrest of students involved in a viral bullying incident at Igbinedion School, describing the act as disturbing and unacceptable.

The State Commissioner for Information, Kassim Afegbua, made this known on Monday while speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. He said the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo has already set up a committee to investigate the incident and determine what led to the attack.

Afegbua said the government was shocked when the video surfaced online, adding that there was no justification for such behaviour in an educational environment.

“It is quite disturbing when we heard it. We were just wondering what could have warranted this,” he said.

He explained that the government had already taken disciplinary action by expelling the students involved in the assault.

“It is very unacceptable; there would be no justification for that kind of treatment. We took an action that led to the expulsion of the students involved.

“It is not just about the expulsion; we also directed the police to ensure that those students are arrested and made to face the full weight of the law,” Afegbua added.

The commissioner strongly condemned the incident, assuring the public that those responsible would be punished according to the law.

He further disclosed that the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, had assured the government that the parents of the students implicated in the bullying would report to the police headquarters in Benin City.

According to him, the police are determined to prosecute those responsible once investigations are concluded to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Afegbua also described the case as a wake-up call for parents and school authorities, stressing the need for stronger discipline and supervision within educational institutions.

He noted that the incident might have remained hidden if not for the fact that one of the students recorded and shared the video online.

The widely circulated footage shows two students repeatedly beating, kicking, and dragging a younger boy believed to be in a junior class. During the assault, one of the attackers used a belt while another was seen stomping on the victim’s chest as he cried out in pain.

The victim could be heard screaming while another student, believed to be the one recording the video, pleaded with the attackers to stop.

As of the time of this report, the exact reason behind the assault remains unknown.
