Voters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) turned
out at their polling units on Saturday to cast ballots in the six area councils
of the territory.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force,
were deployed across the FCT, and movement restrictions were implemented to
ensure a smooth and safe electoral process.
According to the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC), over 1.5 million voters had collected their permanent voter
cards (PVCs) in preparation for the election.
Unlike elections in Nigeria’s 36 states, which are
overseen by state governors, FCT council elections are conducted directly by
INEC, as the territory is administered by a minister appointed by the President
rather than an elected governor.
