Tension has escalated in several communities in
Katsina State following reports that armed bandits issued a deadline demanding
payments from residents, triggering fear and displacement across affected
areas.
According to reports, the ultimatum was communicated
through a letter delivered to communities on April 6, instructing residents to
comply with the demand by April 10. The notice has caused widespread panic in
areas including Sukuntuni, Unguwar Tsamiya, Magama, Walawa, and Tudun Wulli.
Residents say the situation has worsened security
concerns, with sightings of armed men reportedly moving freely on motorcycles
within the communities.
A local resident, who spoke anonymously, revealed that
the demand followed months of attacks, harassment, and abductions allegedly
carried out by bandit groups operating in the region. He added that the
situation deteriorated further after a prominent bandit leader relocated stolen
livestock following an internal dispute before imposing what he described as a
“tax” on the affected communities.
The development has forced many residents to flee
their homes in search of safety. Displaced individuals are said to have
relocated to nearby areas such as Rimaye, parts of Kano State, and Katsina
town, while several villages have reportedly been abandoned.
Community members also expressed concerns about
previous attempts to negotiate with armed groups, noting that such agreements
had only provided temporary relief without addressing the root causes of
insecurity.
In response to the situation, a spokesperson to the
Katsina State Government, Maiwada Dan-Mallam, urged residents to remain calm.
He stated that authorities are investigating the reported threat and suggested
that the letter may have been intended to incite fear rather than reflect an
official or confirmed directive.
He reassured the public that the government is
actively working to ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.
Despite these assurances, anxiety remains high among
affected residents, many of whom are hesitant to return to their homes due to
ongoing security concerns.
