Two-time former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury
made a successful return to the ring after a 16-month absence, securing a
dominant points victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov in London.
Fighting at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Fury
controlled the bout across all 12 rounds, earning wide scorecards from the
judges—two scoring the fight 120-108, while the third judged it 119-109 in his
favour.
Makhmudov began aggressively, landing early punches
and showing intent in the opening round. However, his momentum faded quickly as
Fury adjusted his tactics, switching stances and dictating the pace of the
fight with precise combinations and superior ring control.
By the middle rounds, Fury had taken full command,
outclassing his opponent while maintaining composure against the Russian’s
power. The contest followed a similar pattern through to the final bell, with
Fury comfortably seeing out the victory.
After the fight, attention quickly shifted away from
the bout itself as Fury called out fellow British heavyweight Anthony Joshua,
who was present ringside.
Fury invited Joshua into the ring, but the former
champion declined, leading to a tense verbal exchange between the two fighters.
The situation briefly escalated before officials intervened.
In his post-fight comments, Fury openly challenged
Joshua to a long-anticipated showdown, urging him to accept a fight that fans
have been waiting years to see. He emphasised that the clash has been a decade
in the making and called for it to finally happen.
Joshua eventually responded, firing back with
confidence and asserting his own dominance, insisting he had been pursuing the
fight for years and would be ready if it materialises.
The victory marked Fury’s return after back-to-back
defeats to unified champion Oleksandr Usyk, bringing his professional record to
35 wins, two losses, and one draw.
Reflecting on his performance, Fury expressed
satisfaction with going the distance against a strong opponent, noting that
facing a durable contender provided a better test than a quick knockout.
The fight also comes amid emotional circumstances
surrounding Joshua, who was recently involved in a car accident in Nigeria that
reportedly claimed the lives of two close associates. Fury had earlier
described the incident as a reminder of life’s fragility and a motivating
factor in his return.
Despite several past attempts, a fight between Fury
and Joshua has never materialised due to contract disputes, injuries, and
timing issues. However, with both fighters now active again, anticipation is
once again building for what could be one of boxing’s biggest matchups.
