Suspected fighters linked to Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province have launched a deadly assault on a police facility in Nganzai, Borno State, resulting in the deaths of at least four officers.

The attack occurred in the early hours of April 4, 2026, when heavily armed insurgents stormed the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters around 1:00 a.m. According to reports, the attackers arrived in large numbers and engaged security personnel in an intense gun battle that lasted for an extended period.

Despite resistance from the officers on duty, the attackers eventually overpowered the station. Among those confirmed killed were Inspector Samuel Ezekiel of the Nganzai Division, Inspector Sanusi Mohammed of the 58 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Lafia on special assignment, as well as Police Constables Bitrus Luka and Shaibu Bukar, both attached to the crack squad in Maiduguri.

The spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Kenneth Daso, revealed that the assailants used heavy weaponry, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), during the assault. The attack caused structural damage to parts of the station and led to the partial burning of an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC).

In the aftermath of the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the scene to assess the situation firsthand. He addressed officers at the division, offering condolences over the loss of their colleagues while also commending their bravery in confronting the attackers despite being outgunned.

Security agencies have since heightened alert levels in the area, deploying tactical teams and intensifying operations to prevent further attacks and track down those responsible.

The fallen officers were laid to rest on April 5 in Maiduguri, with burial rites conducted according to both Islamic and Christian traditions at the Kawar Maila Burial Ground and the Maximum Prison Burial Ground.

Senior officers of the command, including the Commissioner of Police and other top officials, attended the solemn ceremony. Religious leaders from the police chaplaincy also led prayers for the deceased, honoring their sacrifice.

The police command described the slain officers as courageous personnel who died in the line of duty, reaffirming its commitment to continuing the fight against insurgency and ensuring security in the region.
