Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has
been sentenced to prison in a landmark ruling, making him the first modern
French leader to potentially serve jail time. The court announced that
prosecutors have one month to notify the 70-year-old when he must report to
prison.
Sentence and Penalties
Sarkozy was sentenced to prison, fined €100,000
($117,000), and banned from holding public office. Even if he appeals, the
custody order remains in effect. While previous convictions allowed him to
serve terms under electronic monitoring, this ruling could send him behind
bars.
Presiding Judge Nathalie Gavarino described the
crimes as of “exceptional gravity” and warned they had the potential to
erode public confidence in the political system.
Other Defendants Sentenced
Several Sarkozy allies were also convicted:
Charges and Acquittals
The court found Sarkozy guilty of criminal
conspiracy but acquitted him of corruption and illegal campaign
financing. Judges also ruled there was no proof that funds from Muammar
Gaddafi’s Libya were ultimately used in Sarkozy’s presidential campaign.
Next Steps for Sarkozy
Sarkozy has the option to appeal or request parole
given his age. However, if the sentence is upheld, he will become the first
former French president to serve an actual prison term — a moment that
underscores the seriousness of the case.
