The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) must make a bold statement by permanently appointing Austin Eguavoen as the head coach of the Super Eagles

This decision should be accompanied by a well-structured contract that guarantees financial and professional parity with what is typically offered to foreign coaches.

Such a move will not only bolster the morale of indigenous coaches but also signal a commitment to nurturing and rewarding homegrown talent.

Austin Eguavoen has proven himself to be a capable coach with deep knowledge of Nigerian football. His previous stints with the Super Eagles showcased his ability to manage the team effectively, even under immense pressure. His familiarity with the local football landscape, coupled with his experience as a former player and coach, makes him uniquely qualified to lead Nigeria back to its glory days.

With proper support, there is no reason why Eguavoen cannot lead the team to success, including securing qualification for the World Cup.

One of the persistent issues in Nigerian football has been the disparity in how indigenous and foreign coaches are treated. While foreign coaches often receive lucrative contracts, superior working conditions, and unwavering support, local coaches are frequently subjected to delayed salaries and insufficient resources. This imbalance not only undermines the confidence of local coaches but also sends a message that their contributions are undervalued.

The NFF must change this narrative by ensuring that Eguavoen and his team are afforded the same level of respect and support as any foreign coach would receive.

Significantly, coaching the Super Eagles comes with unique challenges, including managing a team composed of players from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Nigeria is the most populous Black nation in the world, and its national team reflects this diversity. The mental and emotional toll of uniting such a team and maintaining high performance is immense.

Eguavoen is well-positioned to navigate these challenges effectively.
