Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has
commiserated with family of the late Major General Godwin Osagie Abbe (rtd), a
former military governor of Akwa Ibom and Rivers States.
Gen. Abbe was governor of Rivers State between 1990
and 1992 before Bayelsa State was created out of it on October 1, 1996.
He was also Minister of Interior and later Minister of
Defence between 1988 and 1992.
Governor Diri, in a statement by his spokesperson,
described the late Gen. Abbe as a consummate and professional military officer
that was committed to service of his fatherland.
“His passing is a loss not only to his family, his
community and Edo State but also the country given his track record of
dedicated and selfless pursuit of a greater and united Nigeria.
“Gen. Abbe was noted for his brilliance and upholding
of the highest traditions of the Armed Forces while protecting the territorial
integrity of our country.”
The Bayelsa governor, in expressing the sympathies of
the government and people of the state, urged the Abbe family to be comforted
by his shining legacies of integrity and patriotism as well as his
contributions to national development.
