A first-class traditional ruler in Rivers State, King T. Y. Baridam, has been shot by unknown gunmen during an ambush along the Tekar Sogho Road in Khana Local Government Area.

The attack occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday as the monarch was returning from an engagement in Okwale community.

How the Attack Happened

Eyewitnesses said the assailants ambushed the monarch’s convoy between Taabaa Junction and Sogho, attempting to force his vehicle to stop.

When the driver refused to halt, the gunmen reportedly opened fire on the vehicle.

King Baridam sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, while his driver was also injured during the attack. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The traditional ruler is currently receiving medical care.

Police Confirm Incident, Launch Investigation

Confirming the incident in a statement on Monday, the Rivers State Police Command said the attackers emerged from the bush and opened fire on the monarch’s black Toyota Prado Jeep, shattering the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle.

Police described the victim as the Paramount Ruler of Bangha Community, adding that he sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh.

Although the motive for the attack is yet to be established, security sources said there are strong indications of an assassination attempt.

Notably, this is the second time King Baridam has survived an attempt on his life.

Manhunt Ongoing

The police said patrol teams were immediately deployed to the area to comb the surroundings and track down the attackers.

“The Rivers State Police Command has commenced investigation into the incident and will leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.

The command also appealed to residents to remain calm and provide any credible information that could aid the investigation.

Rising Security Concerns

The attack has renewed concerns over the safety of traditional rulers and the increasing incidents of violent attacks in parts of Rivers State.
