Newcastle United condemned Tottenham Hotspur to a
second consecutive Premier League defeat with a 2-0 victory in north London.
Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa scored in the second
half as Newcastle punished a wasteful Tottenham side whose supporters began
leaving the stadium well before the final whistle.
The result gave Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle his
first Premier League victory since taking charge as Eddie Howe’s replacement.
Jaissle had begun his reign with a 2-2 draw against
Liverpool, but his team produced a more disciplined performance against
Tottenham to claim all three points.
The defeat represented another difficult afternoon for
Roberto De Zerbi, whose Tottenham side suffered a 3-0 loss at Brentford in
their opening league game.
Tottenham have spent more than £300 million during the
summer as De Zerbi attempts to rebuild a squad that narrowly avoided relegation
last season.
However, the club have now failed to score in their
first two league games for the first time since the 1992/93 campaign.
New signing Omar Marmoush made his Tottenham debut
after joining on loan from Manchester City, but the Egypt international was
unable to inspire his new team.
Tottenham started brightly, with Elanga almost giving
Newcastle the lead inside the opening minute before his lob was cleared off the
line.
The hosts then dominated for periods, with Mathys Tel
forcing a save from Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek and several Tottenham
players going close.
Sandro Tonali, making his first appearance against his
former club since his £100 million move to Tottenham, missed a major
opportunity shortly before half-time.
Newcastle punished Tottenham’s wastefulness in the
62nd minute.
Elanga controlled a cushioned header from Amar Dedic
before turning sharply and firing a powerful finish from inside the penalty
area.
Tottenham struggled to respond, and Newcastle doubled
their advantage in the 72nd minute.
Nick Woltemade headed a corner towards Wissa, who
produced a clever close-range finish to seal the victory.
The defeat leaves De Zerbi facing early pressure as
Tottenham’s expensive summer rebuild fails to produce immediate results, while
Newcastle secured an important first league win under Jaissle.
