Huawei has officially launched its first laptops powered by its proprietary HarmonyOS 5, marking a significant shift away from Microsoft Windows and Apple's macOS. This strategic move aims to reduce reliance on U.S. technologies amid ongoing trade restrictions.

 New HarmonyOS-Powered Laptops

Huawei introduced two models:

  • MateBook Fold: This foldable laptop features an 18-inch OLED display that folds to create a 13-inch screen with a digital keyboard. It measures just 7.3mm thick when unfolded and 14.9mm when closed, weighing approximately 1.16kg. The device offers a 3.3K resolution with up to 1600 nits of brightness, up to 32GB of RAM, and 2TB of storage. Priced at around $3,300, it is currently available only in China.
  • MateBook Pro: A conventional laptop design with a physical keyboard, starting at approximately $1,110. It also runs on HarmonyOS 5 and is part of Huawei's initiative to establish a self-contained ecosystem.

HarmonyOS 5: A Homegrown Operating System

HarmonyOS 5 represents Huawei's efforts to develop an independent operating system. Initially introduced for smartphones in 2020, HarmonyOS has expanded to over a billion devices globally, including TVs and now PCs. The OS supports over 150 applications, such as WPS Office and Meitu Xiu Xiu, and has attracted over 7.2 million developers by the end of 2024.

Strategic Implications

Huawei's transition to HarmonyOS for laptops underscores its commitment to technological self-sufficiency, especially after U.S. sanctions in 2019 limited its access to critical components from companies like Intel and Qualcomm. By developing its own operating system and hardware, Huawei aims to offer alternatives to Western tech giants and strengthen its position in the global market.
