Retired Archbishop of Enugu Province (Anglican
Communion), Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, has strongly criticized former
military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida over his recent statement about the
annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
According to The Sun, Chukwuma disclosed that he was
in Bauchi at the time of the election and closely followed the events. He
recalled meeting MKO Abiola during his campaign in Jos and emphasized that
religion was not an issue. He explained that although Abiola and his running
mate were both Muslims, Nigerians supported them because they believed the
leadership would save the country. He stressed that the election, conducted by
Humphrey Nwosu, was credible and widely accepted.
Chukwuma stated that Babangida’s claim of annulling
the election for Nigeria’s benefit was completely false and Babangida should be
jailed. He said “If I have my way IBB should be jailed for that type of
statement and for taking the entire country for a ride.”
Speaking further, Chukwuma also said, “Now you are
telling us that you annulled that election for the good of Nigeria, to save
Nigeria, which is absolute lie, absolute nonsense”
