Osimhen was the subject of a transfer saga during the
summer transfer window, with several top clubs in Europe looking to sign the
in-form striker.
Chelsea, who needed a forward, also made a move to
sign the Super Eagles star late in the transfer window.
However, they failed to reach an agreement with the
player on his wages, allowing him to go on loan to Galatasaray for the
remainder of the season.
Speaking on talkSPORT , Cundy revealed that
he was thrilled with the Senegalese international's form and that if the Blues
had acquired Osimhen, he would not have been in his current form.
Cunday said, "I’m glad we didn’t get Osimhen in
the summer because if we did, we wouldn’t be seeing the numbers of Jackson is
putting up.
"But there is a case to be said. Do we need a
backup? And Nkunku right now isn’t that backup? And that’s the problem we have
as a squad
"We don’t really have a genuine backup for
Jackson, but because he’s so young. How do you back up someone so young.
"So therefore, if you bring someone in, you got
to bring someone who’s going to go over Jackson. Who is that player?"
Enzo Maresca has trusted the Senegalese forward, and
the forward has returned the favour by becoming his first-choice striker.
In ten Premier League games this season, he has
contributed seven goals and three assists, making him Chelsea's co-leading
scorer in the league together with Cole Palmer.
Meanwhile, Osimhen has also continued his goalscoring
form, having scored the equaliser for Galatasaray in their 1-1 draw against
AZ Alkmaar.
