The impeachment process initiated against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, has suffered another setback following the withdrawal of support by two additional members of the State House of Assembly.

Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, announced their decision to pull out of the process, citing the need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing political crisis in the state.

Their withdrawal comes less than 48 hours after two other lawmakers took a similar stance. While acknowledging that the governor and his deputy may have breached certain constitutional provisions, the lawmakers said their decision was influenced by appeals from respected leaders and key stakeholders who urged restraint in the interest of peace and stability.

With the latest development, four of the 26 lawmakers who initially endorsed the notice of alleged gross misconduct have now distanced themselves from the impeachment move, signaling growing support within the Assembly for dialogue rather than confrontation.

The Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to reconvene on January 15, 2026, as attention shifts to how the leadership will manage the deepening divisions within the chamber.

Earlier, Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo, representing Omuma Constituency, and Peter Abbey of Degema Constituency, had publicly withdrawn from the impeachment process during a press briefing in Port Harcourt. They urged their colleagues to explore alternative mechanisms for resolving the political impasse, warning that prolonged tension could further destabilise governance in the state.
