The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, has pledged to work closely with
the National Assembly on amendments to the Electoral Act to enhance
transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s elections.
Speaking at the 56th Annual National Conference of the
Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT) held at the Federal University of
Lokoja, where he was honoured for his service, Amupitan said the Commission
will ensure the new reforms reflect lessons learned from past elections.
“I will start waiting to participate in the National
Assembly to be sure that we have a learning electoral process and laws that
Nigerians should be proud of,” he stated.
The INEC Chairman emphasized that a sound legal
framework is the bedrock of credible elections, adding that one of the goals of
the ongoing reform is to minimize electoral litigations by promoting fairness
and transparency.
“Let us not see electoral petitions in court,” he
said, urging stakeholders to build a process that reflects the will of the
people.
Amupitan was presented with a plaque by the university
in recognition of his dedication and inspiration. He also called on the
academic community to continue supporting democratic development in Nigeria.
Prof. Amupitan was sworn in by President Bola Tinubu
on October 23, following Senate confirmation on October 16. He succeeds
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman from 2015 to October
2025.
